It is important to mention that often when a child enters into a group setting they are more susceptible to illness. This is really positive as over a period of time they do build up a good immunity. We ask that if your child is obviously unwell, that you do not bring them in for his/her nursery session.

Some of the more common ailments:

Conjunctivitis - This condition is highly contagious and is very uncomfortable for children. If suspected it is important to seek medical advice as soon as possible, if eye drops are prescribed we would ask that children are kept away from the Nursery to avoid possible re-infection for at least 48 hours for the medication to take effect.

Chicken Pox - In the case of chicken pox children should not attend Nursery until the spots have scabbed over; this is typically between 5-10 days.

High Temperatures - High temperatures are always a concern. If your child develops a high temperature during their session at nursery, we will contact you immediately. We will attempt to reduce your child's temperature with tepid sponging and request that your child is taken home. In this event please collect your child as soon as possible.

Diarrhea/Sickness - We ask that any child suffering from diarrhea/sickness is collected from nursery immediately. They are not permitted to return to nursery until they have been free of the symptoms for at least 48hrs. We also apply this ruling to our staff.

Coughs and colds - Runny noses occur frequently, often accompanied by coughs and sneezes. We are happy to accommodate such ailments provided the children are happy. Sometimes all your child will want is to “snuggle” up with mum or dad. Please use your judgment to assess whether your child could cope with nursery.

Hand Foot and Mouth - As the name suggests, this disease causes blisters in the mouth, on the backs of the hands and/or the feet. It is a mild viral infection and commonly affects children under the age of 4. Provided your child is well and has been diagnosed by a doctor, he/she may attend nursery.

Impetigo - Is a common, highly infectious, skin condition caused by a bacterial organism known as Staphylococcus. It is usually not serious but is highly contagious and therefore needs to be treated promptly. Once the infection has been treated and is completely cleared up (typically 5 days) they may return to nursery.

Head lice
As many of you must be aware Head lice are very rampant bugs which transfer from head to head very quickly. If you discover Head lice in your child's hair we ask that you advise the Nursery and refrain from bringing him or her to Nursery, until all signs of lice and eggs have gone. There are many treatments available which can be purchased at any chemist. Please take advice from your pharmacist.

Medicines

Recorded and “signed in” prescribed medicines should be the only medication given during Nursery hours on a regular basis. Non-prescription medication e.g. pain and fever relief or teething gel may be administered, but only with the prior written consent of the parent and only when there is a health reason to do so, this must be clearly stated the reason for the administration and clear instructions for administration i.e if temp over 101/39.5. If your child has medication to control temperatures we will only administer this for a period of 24 hours and will request you seek medical advice before any further administration is given. We will be unable to administer medicines containing aspirin unless it has been prescribed for that child by a doctor.
